View Tribute and Sign Guestbook Maria L. (Moraes) Paiva, 80, of the city died unexpectedly Thursday, January 19, 2006 at St. Luke's Hospital. She was the widow of William A. Paiva, Sr.
Born February 1, 1925 in Chelmsford the daughter of Amandio and Adlina (Lawrence) Moraes, she lived there as an infant and lived in New Bedford for most of her life and sixteen years in Dartmouth.
Mrs. Paiva worked as a stitcher and supervisor for Elco Dress Manufacturing for many years. She was an animal lover who especially loved her dog Jesse whom she would walk daily. She enjoyed socializing with everyone and will be remembered for her warm outgoing personality.
She is survived by a son, William A. Paiva, Jr. of New Bedford; a daughter, Rev. Dr. Arlene Marie Paiva of Fairhaven; four sisters, Louisa Borges of Dartmouth, Margaret Borges of New Bedford, Dolores Cardoza of New Bedford, and Albertina Antunes of Westport; a granddaughter, Jessica Marie Paiva of Portsmouth, RI; and many nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late Rosemarie Paiva and Baby Jane Paiva; the sister of the late Manuel, Anselmo, and Alzira Moraes.
Funeral Information
Her funeral will be Monday, January 23, 2006 at 9:00 AM in the Unitarian Memorial Church, Fairhaven. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, New Bedford. Arrangements are by the Donaghy Funeral Home, 465 County Street, New Bedford. Calling hours are Sunday evening from 6-9 PM.
