View Tribute and Sign Guestbook SOMERSET – William J. Martel, Jr., 86, of Bayview Avenue, Somerset, died Wednesday, September 3, 2008, at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. Born in Fall River, a son of the late William J. & Blanche (Vincent) Martel, Sr., he was the husband of Mary Louise Wessendorf Martel, and the husband of the late Pauline (Boretti) Martel.
Mr. Martel was employed as an electrician for more than sixty-one years with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (I.B.E.W.), before retiring several years ago. He served in the Armed Forces and was a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, serving for six years, and was a WWII Veteran, serving his country proudly with the First Marine Division, and fought in the battle of Guadalcanal.
A Somerset resident for more than sixty-four years, coming from Fall River, he was a parishioner of St. Louis de France Church, and enjoyed fishing.
Besides his wife , Mr. Martel leaves two sons, Paul Martel of Tucson, Arizona, and Alan & Mary Ann Martel of Tucson Arizona; two step-sons, David & Gabrielle Wessendorf of Chicago, Illinois, and Donald & Maryellen Wessendorf of Chicago, Illinois; two daughters, Anita & Roy Rogers of Richmond, Virginia, and Susan & Ralph Wilsack of Choctaw, Oklahoma; a sister, Gertrude Thivierge of Fall River; five grandchildren, Peter, Daniel Wilsack, Kaitlyn & Victoria Martel, Daniel & Bronwyn Ouper; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Louis Martel.
Funeral Information
His funeral will be held Monday, September 8, 2008, at 9:00AM from the HATHAWAY COMMUNITY HOME FOR FUNERALS, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset, MA, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in St. Louis de France Church, 56 Buffington St., Swansea. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours will be held Sunday, September 7, from 3:00–6:00PM in the funeral home. Burial will be private.
