Leonard Richards Charnley D.M.D. of South Dartmouth, died suddenly Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at age 85, at St. Lukeís Hospital in New Bedford. He was the husband of Patricia (Reed) Charnley for 61 years and the son of the late Herbert and Doris (Richards) Charnley of New Bedford.
Dr. Charnley was an Endodontist who practiced for 45 years in both Dartmouth, MA and Newport, RI. He graduated from Tufts Dental School and volunteered as a teacher there for 20 years. He was also the past president of both the Boston Endodontic Society and the New Bedford Dental Society.
As a commissioned Lieutenant in the Untied States Navy, he served as a dentist at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina from 1954-1956. An avid sailor and fisherman; he designed and built Sea Dory Skiffs. He was past Commodore and Director of the New Bedford Yacht Club. He loved spending the summer months sailing on his boats to Cuttyhunk and summer excursions to Maine.
As a young man he was a talented musician who sang and played saxophone and clarinet with the Carl Bayreuther Orchestra. Dr. Charnley was a man who enjoyed life in all its pleasures and challenges, a dedicated family man and friend to all.
He is survived by his wife and five children; David Charnley and his wife Diane of Fairhaven, MA, Mark Charnley D.M.D. of Mill Valley, CA, Melissa Charnley Hamilton and her husband Dr. Joshua Hamilton of Falmouth, MA, Carolyn Charnley-Morse and her husband Stephen Morse D.M.D. of Yarmouth, ME and Marina (Charnley) Throop and her husband Capt. David Throop USCG; along with ten grandchildren, Jessica and Elizabeth Charnley, Ross and Kelsey Hamilton, Benjamin and MacMIllian Morse and Benjamin, Rachel, Dominique and Keegan Throop.
Visiting hours are Friday from 4-7pm in the Donaghy Funeral Home, 465 County Street, New Bedford, MA. His funeral service will be held Saturday, February 8, 2014, at 10:00 am, at St. Peterís Church, 351 Elm St., Padanaram. Interment will follow in South Dartmouth Cemetery.
