NEW BEDFORD – Concepcion "Choco" Ferrer, 81, of New Bedford, died at home Tuesday, February 2, 2010, after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Maria (Lopez) Ferrer. Born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, the son of the late Julio and the late Leonarda (Rodriguez) Ferrer, he came to New Bedford when he was a teenager and lived in the city most of his life. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Guagalupe Parish at St. James Church, New Bedford.

A “Jack of All Trades,” Choco worked as a commercial fisherman, farmer, a laborer in the cranberry industry, as a carpenter, and as an auto mechanic, but he most loved to be on the sea. He enjoyed gambling, taking trips to the track and casinos, etc.

He is survived by four sons, Julio A. Ferrer of Brockton, Jorge Ferrer of WA, Mario Ferrer of CA, and Cunny Ferrer of New Bedford; two daughters, Mary Bel Civitarese of New Bedford and Gloria M. Floyd of NC; two sisters, Santa Rodriguez of New Bedford and Josepha Ferrer of Puerto Rico; fifteen grandchildren, Sonia E. Ferrer, Julio Ferrer, Jr., Jorge Ferrer, Jr., Alexander Ferrer, David J. Civitarese, Stephen M. Civitarese, Ruben Villanueva, Jr., Jonathan P. Villanueva, Shanna M. Villanueva, Cunny Ferrer, Jr., Francisco Ferrer, Tanisha Ferrer, Ramon Ferrer, Jr., Joseph Ferrer and David Ferrer; and eleven great-grandchildren. Mr. Ferrer was the father of the late Ramon Ferrer.

Calling hours will be Friday, February 5, 2010, from 5:00-8:00PM and Saturday, February 6, 2010, from 11:00AM-2:00PM in THE DONAGHY FUNERAL HOME, 465 County Street, New Bedford.
