Sylvia (Barros) Hebert, 81, of Rochester, passed away at home Tuesday, June 6, 2017, after a long courageous battle with Leukemia. She was the wife of the late Paul Hebert.
Born and raised in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary R. (Arruda) Barros, she lived in New York and California prior to settling in Rochester in 1971. Sylvia was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church, in Rochester, where she sang in the choir and helped with the annual chicken barbeque.
Sylvia was a graduate of New Bedford High School and Framingham State Teacher’s College and had been an elementary school teacher for many years in the city of New Bedford’s public school system. She was an active member of the Rochester Council on Aging, where she ran the kitchen for the lunch program. Sylvia also volunteered at the Zeiterion Theatre, in New Bedford, for many years.
She is survived by two sons, Michael Paul Hebert of Rochester and Christopher R. Hebert and his companion Joanne Pettipas of Acushnet; a daughter, Rose-Mary Smirnov and her husband William of East Wareham; a brother, Bruce Barros and his companion Stina Tyszkowski of Bristol, RI; two sisters, Cynthia Sylvia and her husband Edward of East Freetown and Barbara Bernard of New Bedford; two grandchildren, Monica Larson and her husband Brett and Michael Hebert, Jr.; two great granddaughters, Jordyn and Torri; and eight nephews.
Calling hours are Monday, from 5-8pm, in the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Fairhaven.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at 9:30am, in St. Rose of Lima Church, 282 Vaughan Hill Rd., Rochester. Cremation will follow and interment will be private.
