NEW BEDFORD – Phyllis M. King, 95, of New Bedford, died unexpectedly Saturday, August 16, 2008, at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Herbert and the late Bertha (Gifford) King, she was a lifelong resident of the city and longtime active member of the North Baptist Church.

Miss King was a 1930 graduate of New Bedford High School and a graduate of the Campbell Secretarial School. She worked as a secretary at the Cornish Insurance Company. In 1996 Miss King was honored by the Interchurch Council with the Sydney Adams Award for outstanding service to the community and the Council, on which she served for more than fifty years. She also was a member of the Fairhaven Grange, Church Women United and several other church-related groups.

She is survived by a brother, Roswell G. King and his wife Florence L. King of New Bedford; a sister, Virginia B. Carpentier of New Bedford; two nephews, Stephen A. King of Fairhaven and Warren K. Hutchinson of Dracut; a niece, Shirley G. Farrington of Falmouth; four great-nephews; three great-nieces and ten great-great nieces and nephews. Miss King was the sister of the late Carleton H. King and Gladys W. Hutchinson.

Funeral Information

Her funeral service will be held at 11:00AM Wednesday, August 20, 2008, in THE DONAGHY FUNERAL HOME, 465 County Street, New Bedford. Cremation will follow. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, August 19, from 4:00-7:00PM in the funeral home.
