View Tribute and Sign Guestbook FALL RIVER – Frances A. (Whalon) Shea, 87, a lifelong resident of Fall River, died Wednesday, December 3, 2008, at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. Born in Fall River, the daughter of the late William F. and Susan F. (McNulty) Whalon, she was the wife of the late John E. Shea.
A graduate with the Class of 1939 of BMC Durfee High School, Mrs. Whalon graduated from Campbell’s Secretary School in 1941. During WWII she worked at the office of the British Admiralty in Fall River and received a citation from the British Government for her loyal service. She took music and vocal lessons and performed along with her brother Joseph and sister Mary at several USO and church events during the War. Mrs. Shea also worked in the office at Weyerhaeuser Lumber in Portsmouth and Anderson Little in Fall River. She then worked for the main branch of the Fall River Public Library in the children’s department for eighteen years, retiring in 1983.
Mrs. Shea was a longtime communicant of the former Saint Patrick’s Church in Fall River and a member of the Charlton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Retired State, County, and Municipal Employee’s Association, the Fall River Women’s Club, the Friends of the Fall River Public Library, and was a seventy year member of the Little Theatre in Fall River. Mrs. Shea enjoyed traveling extensively with her late husband John.
She is survived by two daughters, Susan A. McDonald and her husband Frederick B. of Fall River, and Ellen L. Shea of Fall River; two sisters, Mary V. Toole of Connecticut and Susan Bibeau of Somerset; and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Ellen Kane, Margaret Whalon, Anna Whalon, Catherine Lowney, James, William, John and Joseph Whalon.
Funeral Information
Her funeral will be held Tuesday, December 9, 2008, at 10:00AM from THE HATHAWAY HOME for FUNERALS, 1813 Robeson St., Fall River, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00AM in Good Shepherd Parish, 1598 South Main St., Fall River. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will follow in Saint Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River. Calling hours with Video Photo Album will be held Monday, December 8, from 3:00-7:00PM.
