SOMERSET, MA – William T. Day, 89, of Somerset, died Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at the Catholic Memorial Home in Fall River. Born in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Alfred and Lucille (Tennant) Day, he was the husband of Gwendolyn “Gwen” (Blood) Day, with whom he shared a sixty-three year marriage.

A veteran who served his country during WWII with the United States Army 715th Amphibian Tractor Battalion, earning the rank of Corporal, Mr. Day worked for the government for forty-six years, starting as a toolmaker apprentice at Watertown Arsenal in Watertown, MA, then as a toolmaker for Quonset Point in North Kingstown, RI, the Atomic Energy Commission in Los Almos, NM, and then for the Naval Underwater Systems in Newport, RI, before retiring in 1991.

He was a member and past commander of the District 9 American Legion and a member of the Warren S. Hathaway American Legion Post 228 in Somerset and Post 303 in Swansea. William was also a member of the local chapter of AARP and a former member of the Somerset Lions Club.

In addition to his wife of sixty-three years, Mr. Day is survived by three sons, Kenneth A. Day and his wife Colleen of Swansea, MA, Donald W. Day and his wife Elizabeth of Assonet, MA, and Jeffrey Day and his wife Josel of Rehoboth, MA; and two grandchildren, Jonathan Day and Sarah Dudley.

Funeral Information

His funeral service will be held Friday, June 11, 2010, at 8:00 am from the HATHAWAY COMMUNITY HOME for FUNERALS, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00am in Saint Thomas More Church, 386 Luther Ave., Somerset, with burial to follow with Military Honours in Saint Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours will be held Thursday, June 11, from 4:00-7:00pm in the funeral home.
