ATTLEBORO – Joseph A. Scarfo, 88 of Lexington Avenue, Attleboro, died Sunday, July 12, 2009, at his residence. Born in Utica, New York, a son of the late John & Alice (Marino) Scarfo, he was the husband of the late Harriett (Keim) Scarfo. A resident of Attleboro since 1946, relocating from Utica, NY, Mr. Scarfo worked for the Larson Tool Company for over fifty-five years before retiring, and still worked for them part-time in the coffee shop after retirement. He served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps as an Infantry Chief during WWII. While on active duty with the Marines, he was very proud that he had crossed the Equator, while serving on S.S. Lundine. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church and a member of the Attleboro Elks # 1014 as well as a member of the Foreman’s Club. He enjoyed hunting, photography, golf, gardening, and flowers. In 1938 he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) before joining the Marines. He was also a member of the Attleboro VFW. He is survived by his former son-in-law and lifelong friend, Ronald Fontaine of Attleboro; two brothers, John Scarfo and Phil Scarfo; and two sisters, Louise Pavese and Marie Didio, all of Utica, New York. He was the grandfather of Michael and his wife Melissa Fontaine of Attleboro, Christopher and his wife Maria Fontaine of Attleboro, and Tracie Donato of North Attleboro, and the great-grandfather of Zachery Fontaine, Garrett Fontaine, Michaela Fontaine, Krysta Fontaine, Morgan Donato, and Joshua Donato. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Anthony Scarfo, Francis Scarfo, and the late Theresa Audino. Funeral InformationHis funeral service will be held Thursday, July 16, 2009, at 10:00AM in THE FOLEY - HATHAWAY FUNERAL HOME, 126 South Main Street, Attleboro, Massachusetts, followed by burial with Military Honors will be in North Purchase Cemetery, Attleboro.
