FAIRHAVEN – Joseph Emile Labadie, 91, of Alden Road, formerly of Acushnet, died Saturday, November 29, 2008, at Alden Court after a long illness. He was the beloved husband of the late Laura C. (Chaves) Labadie with whom he shared sixty-one years of marriage.

Mr. Labadie often talked about working in Vermont under the Civilian Conservation Corps from November 1935 through March 1939. He served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers during World War II from October 1942 to 1945, in Africa, France, Germany and Italy. Upon returning home, he worked at the Newport Naval Station and later for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for over thirty years.

He also owned Labadie’s Lawn and Garden Service from 1946-1979. During this time he sponsored and participated in bowling leagues and sponsored a baseball team. In the 1950s he actively volunteered for the Fairhaven Civil Defense as an ambulance driver and dispatcher. He also owned and managed Dartmouth Cyclery with his son-in-law, Bob. He attended New Bedford Vocational Technical School and later received his High School Diploma from New Bedford High School sometime during the 70s. He also attended evening classes at U. Mass Dartmouth. He enjoyed tending to his property in Acushnet and spending time with his family and wife Laura.

He leaves one daughter Carole Hall and her husband Bob of Acushnet; two grandchildren, James Hall and his wife Cheryl of Acushnet and Wendy Hall-Furtado of Plymouth, MA; four great-grandchildren, Tanya Hall of New Bedford and Samuel, William, and Charles Furtado of Plymouth; a brother, Edward Labadie of Hartford, CT, and a sister, Sister Irene Labadie of Valley Field, Canada; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Labadie was the father of the late David Labadie and the brother of the late, Br. Albert Labadie and Theresa Landry.

Funeral Information

His funeral will be held Tuesday, December 2, 2008, at 8:45AM from THE FAIRHAVEN FUNERAL HOME, 117 Main Street, Fairhaven, Massachusetts, to be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in Saint Mary’s Church, Main Street, North Fairhaven. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery #1, New Bedford. Calling hours will be held Monday, December 1, from 5:00-8:00PM in the funeral home.
