ATTLEBORO – Arlene A. (McAvenia) Bamford, 80, of Rathbun Willard Drive, Attleboro, died unexpectedly on Monday, August 6, 2007, at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. Born in Cambridge, MA, a daughter of the late James F. & Alice E. (Walther) McAvenia, she was the wife of the late Robert Bamford.

Mrs. Bamford earned an Associate’s degree in accounting from Boston University in 1946 and a Master’s degree from Notre Dame of Maryland in 1950, from which she had earlier earned a Bachelor of Science degree in social work. She received a Master’s degree in psychiatric social work from Boston College in 1952.

Mrs. Bamford was employed as a supervisor for the Department of Social Services for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for eighteen years, before retiring in 1981. Prior to that assignment, she previously worked as a psychiatric social worker at the Augusta State Hospital in Augusta, Maine, for two years; and she was the first counselor for blind children for the State of Maine for four years.

She was an Attleboro resident since 1962, having relocated from Taunton. She was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church. She was involved in the work of the Salvation Army, loved books and was an avid reader. She loved to travel and enjoyed the arts and theatre. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and grandchildren, and was very proud of all their accomplishments.

She is survived by five daughters and their husbands, Catherine & David Ribblett of Vail, Arizona, Carol E. & Donald MacEachern of North Attleboro, Maureen & Charles Barta of Orlando, Florida, Colleen Bamford of Attleboro, and Eileen & Robert, Mosely Jr. of Orlando, Florida. She was the grandmother of Heather, Ross, Shea Ribblett, Rory, Tegan MacEachern, Matthew, Marcy, Maria, and Makenzie Figuerado. She also leaves several nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. She was the sister of the late Raymond McAvenia, the late Charles McAvenia, and the late Cmdr. James McAvenia, USN.

Funeral Information

Her funeral will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2007, at 8:30AM from the COOK-HATHAWAY FUNERAL HOME, 160 Park St., Attleboro, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in St. John the Evangelist Church, 133 North Main St., Attleboro. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will be at a later date in St. Mary Cemetery, North Attleboro. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 5:00-9:00PM in the funeral home.
