TAUNTON – Marian E. (Long) Fernandes, 87, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, in the Longmeadow of Taunton Nursing Home. Born in Washington, DC, the daughter of the late James and Mildred (Monroe) Long, she was the wife of the late Walter Fernandes. Mrs. Fernandes was the mother of the late John E. Frye, who was in elementary school at the time when the people of the Washington, DC, district had no direct representation in Congress. She subsequently joined the PTA and became spokeswoman for all the schools in Southeast Washington between the Capital and the Eastern Branch of the Potomac River. In that capacity, she testified before Congress on many matters concerning schools. She was the Chairman of the Arlene Payson Padelford Scholarship Committee for many years. Mrs. Fernandes moved to Taunton when she married her late husband and joined the Memorial United Methodist Church. There she was a member and President of the Untied Methodist Women and the Wesleyan Circle. She was a member of the church’s Board of Trustees and was a Lay Leader several times. Mrs. Fernandes was named to the Board of Trustees of the United Methodist Elder Center in East Providence, RI, and was its secretary for ten years. She was also employed by the former Mt. Hope Machinery Company for twenty-five years, where she served as an office manager. She was an avid fan of the Boston sports teams, the Red Sox, New England Patriots, the Bruins and the Boston Celtics. Marian was the sister of Thomas Long of Maryland and the sister-in-law of Virginia Babbitt of Connecticut, and Beatrice Fernandes of Fairhaven. She was the aunt of several. Funeral InformationRelatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service in the Memorial United Methodist Church, 176 Somerset Ave., Taunton, Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at 10:00AM. A visiting hour will be held in THE CRAPO-HATHAWAY FUNERAL HOME, 350 Somerset Ave. (Route 138 South), Taunton, Tuesday from 8:30 to 9:30AM, prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow in Mayflower Hill Cemetery.
