Robert G. Martel

Robert G. Martel, 81, of Assonet, MA, passed away in the Island Terrace Nursing Home, on Tuesday. He was the husband of Joan D. (Chouinard) Martel.
Born in Fall River, a son of the late Rosario Martel and the late Georgette (Tardiff) Martel, he lived much of his life in Assonet. Robert was a Korean War veteran, having served in the Navy as a radio operator from 1953 to 1956. He then trained as an engineer and went on to work for Ratheon 26 years and for Honeywell retiring at the age of 62.
He was an active member at St. Bernard Church, Assonet, having served a number of years as president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He had also been active with the Freetown Council on Aging.
Besides his wife, he is survived by five children Bruce Martel of Dartmouth, Mark Martel and his wife Jennifer of Fall River, Laurie Martel (and her late partner Jan) of Assonet, Cheryl Buono and her husband Jeff of Leominster, and Linda Bouchard and her husband Ray of Fall River; six grandchildren, Sarah, Kyle, Amanda, Jonathan, Kevin and Steve; also many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by five siblings, Pauline Couture, Irene Bruneau, Victor, Richard and Roger Martel.
His funeral will be held Thursday, at 8:30 AM, from the Hathaway Home for Funerals, 1813 Robeson Street, Fall River, with a 10 AM funeral mass in St. Bernard’s Church, Assonet. Burial to follow at the Assonet Burying Ground. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
