View Tribute and Sign Guestbook NEW BEDFORD – Edmund L. Paiva, 92, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, Sunday, November 16, 2008, at The Oaks Nursing Home in New Bedford. Born in Fairhaven, MA, the son of the late Joseph and Florinda (Paige) Paiva, he was the loving husband of the late Angelina (Cabeca) Paiva.
Mr. Paiva was a manager of the shoe department of the former M. C. Swift & Son clothing store for over twenty years, retiring in 1986. A World War II Army veteran, he had served during Normandy, Northern France, Rineland Ardennes Central Europe and the Battle of the Bulge, earning the good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon. He was a life member and past executive board member of the American Legion Post #166 Fairhaven. He enjoyed vegetable and floral gardening as well as woodworking.
He leaves one daughter, Angelica M. Blackburn and her husband Steven of New Bedford; one son Bradford E. Paiva and his wife Christine of East Freetown, MA; four grandchildren Matthew Robichaud, Kathleen Paiva, Tracey Duval, Karen Facchiano; three great-grandchildren, Noah Gomes, Nathan Gomes and Kaylee Glidden. Mr. Paiva was the brother of the late John Paiva, Anthony Paiva, Joseph Piva, Virginia Cruz, Alice Bellavance and Lena Rodrigues.
Funeral Information
His funeral will be held Thursday, November 20, 2008, at 8:45AM from THE FAIRHAVEN FUNERAL HOME, 117 Main Street, Fairhaven, Massachusetts, to be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in Saint Joseph’s Church, Spring and Adams Street. Burial will follow in Saint John’s Cemetery, New Bedford. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, November 19, from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00PM in the funeral home.
