ATTLEBORO – Malcolm M. Wendell, 80, of Tyler St., Attleboro, died Sunday, May 4, 2008, in the Life Care Center of Attleboro. Born in Attleboro, a son of the late Deden A. T. and Dorothy E. (Barrows) Wendell, he was the husband of the late Dorothy “Googie” (Fisher) Wendell.

A life-long resident of Attleboro, where he graduated from Attleboro High School, Mr. Wendell was a member of the first Attleboro High School basketball team to win the state championship. He attended Brown University and Bryant College and served with the U. S. Navy.

Mr. Wendell was employed as the Golf Course Superintendent for the Highland Country Club, the Wannamoisett Country Club, and the RI Country Club for many years before retiring. He was an avid golfer scoring several “hole’s in one” and was a member of the Wannamoisett Country Club.

Mr. Wendell was also a member of the RI Golf Course Superintendents Association, the New England Golf Course Superintendents Association, and the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. He was one of the three founding members of the Attleboro Area Golf Association and had won the Attleboro City Open three times. He was a member of the Second Congregational Church of Attleboro.

He leaves one son, Neil M. and his wife Susan R. Wendell of South Kingston, RI; and one daughter, Dee T. and her husband James J. Shortelle of Attleboro; three cousins, Bruce and Gary Carlson and Linda Okvist; and five grandchildren, Jennifer, Brian, William, Philip and Caroline. He was the father of the late Kimberly Welsh and the brother of the late Gloria Johnson.
