George W. Nelson, 69, formerly of New Bedford passed away Sunday, November 5, 2017, at the Blue Hills Health and Rehab Center, in Stoughton, after a long illness.
Born in New Bedford, son of the late George W. Nelson and Victoria (Lingoski) Cargile, he was a lifelong New Bedford resident.
George served his country as a United States Marine during the Vietnam War and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a life member of the VFW Poirier Post, in New Bedford, a member of the YMCA, enjoyed dancing and marched in numerous parades with his dog Buddy.
He is survived by his two sisters, Beverly Arnold and her husband Jeffrey of Broadalbin, NY and Marybeth Pryor Guzman and her husband George Guzman of New Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are Thursday, November 9, 2017, from 5-8pm, in the Donaghy Funeral Home, 465 County Street, New Bedford. Cremation will follow and a Graveside Service will be held Thursday, November 16, 2017, at 11:00am, in Rural Cemetery, New Bedford with Marine Corp. Honors.
