Alfred C. "Mr. Del" Dellecese

NEW BEDFORD – Alfred C. "Mr. Del" Dellecese, 67, of Fairhaven, died Monday, March 30, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Joan B. (Barboza) Dellecese, his high school sweet heart and wife of forty-seven years. Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Cesare and the late Hilda (Pacheco) Dellecese, he was a lifelong resident of Fairhaven and a graduate of the Fairhaven High School Class of 1959 and a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Fairhaven.

Mr. Dellecese was a salesman for McKesson Liquors for fifteen years until his retirement. Prior to that he had worked for Charles Gilman Liquors and as a salesman for Kasanof’s and Wonder Bread Bakery.

He was a member and past officer of both the Thomas Livsey Memorial Club and the Fairhaven Varsity Club. Mr. Dellecese was a member of the Teamsters Local #59, the Fairhaven High School Hall of Fame Committee, and the Fairhaven Recreation Commission, both of which he served as secretary. He was the Fairhaven High School boys basketball and girls softball official scorer for twenty years this year, a former coach of various youth basketball leagues and an official softball umpire many years and commissioner of the Fairhaven Youth Umpires Association.

Al wrote various columns for the Advocate, Free Press and Standard Times including, “Mr. Del Speaks”. He played both softball and basketball in the New Bedford City League and was president and founder of the Fairhaven Mixed Doubles Adult Pitch League. He enjoyed watching and playing all sports, playing cards, traveling, going to the theater and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Kimberly J. Scieszka and her husband Jon of Fairhaven; a son, Christopher Dellecese of Denver, CO; a sister, Beverly Bennett and her husband John of Acushnet; two brothers, Barry Dellecese and his companion Cindy Martin of Fairhaven and Raymond Dellecese and his wife Anne of Dartmouth; two grandchildren, Katherine and Carolyn Scieszka; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and great nieces and nephews.

Funeral Information

His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, April 4, 2009, at 9:00AM in St. Mary’s Church in Fairhaven, followed by interment in River-Side Cemetery, Fairhaven. Calling hours will be held Friday, April 3, from 5:00-8:00PM in THE FAIRHAVEN FUNERAL HOME, 117 Main Street, Fairhaven.
