View Tribute and Sign Guestbook NEW BEDFORD – James G. Kelley Sr., 84, of New Bedford, died Sunday, August 8, 2010,.at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. Born in South Amboy, New Jersey, a son of the late John T. & Rose (Rehfus) Kelley, he was the husband of the late Marie “Rita” (Galipeau) Kelley.
Mr. Kelley retired from the United States Marine Corps after twenty-eight years of service with the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. He proudly served his nation during WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, the latter in which he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of the USS Juneau Association, the Parris Island Drill Instructors Association, and a member of the 1St, 2nd,3rd, and 6th Division, 1st Prov Brigade WWII, 1st Prov Brigade Korea.
He attended and taught at the Marine Corps School in Quantico, VA. He was also stationed at the U. S. Marine Barracks in Kenetra, Morocco, and was an instructor of Royal Moroccan Marines. While stationed at Quantico, he coached multiple sports and refereed (AAU) football, basketball, and softball world wide.
Mr. Kelley was a member of the USMC Retirees Association, the DAV, the American Legion, and the VFW nationally. He also worked at Brittany Dye and Printing, where he retired after twenty years. During his association with Brittany Dye, he was the floor supervisor in the color shop and also head Steward representing the Teamsters local 59. He was also a thirty-year member of the 6th Bristol Club, and enjoyed all sports, especially collegiate football and March Madness (NCAA basketball).
He is survived by a son, James G. “Biff” Kelley, Jr., and his wife Marie of New Bedford, MA; he was the grandfather of Meghan , Lauren, Ryan, Devin Kelley, and the great-grandfather of one. He was also the brother of the late Thomas Kelley, John Kelley, George Kelley, Robert Kelley, and Charlotte Troyano, Margaret Lotts, and Rose Marie Derent. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
