TAUNTON – Stephen H. Rhodes, President and co-owner of the M M Rhodes Company in Taunton, a family business, died on Friday, November 16, 2007, in the Longmeadow of Taunton Health Care Facility. Born in Taunton, the son of the late Marcus and Ruth (Bangs) Rhodes, a lifelong resident of Taunton, he was the husband of the late Madeleine (Story) Rhodes and the late Esther (Freeman) Rhodes. Mr. Rhodes was a graduate with the Class of 1929 of Taunton High School, where he was Captain of the Cadet Corps and a member of the Taunton High Band under the direction of the late Bob Park. He was also a graduate of MIT in Boston in 1933. He was very active lifetime member of the Pilgrim Congregational Church on Broadway in Taunton. He was member of the Boy Scouts and the Knights of Avalon of the Pilgrim Church. Active in his adult life with the Boy Scouts, Knights of Avalon, Mr. Rhodes sang in Barbershop Groups, served as a Trustee of the Taunton Savings Bank and the Board of Directors of the YMCA in Taunton. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Taunton, where he received the Paul Harris Award, one of the top achievements in that organization. He served as a member of the TMLP Board, the Sea Scouts, was First Commodore of the Taunton Yatch Club, enjoyed model railroading, was a Chief Petty Officer in the Coast Guard Auxillary during WW II and was a member of the Taunton School Committee for twelve years. He was the father of Marcia Pettine of Rhode Island and Susanne Waisner of Ohio; and the step-father of Gail Brimicombe of Rhode Island and Linda Freeman of Florida. He was the grandfather of twelve and the great- grandfather of eighteen. He was the brother of the late Louise Brown, Rowean Thompson and Marcus Rhodes. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral InformationA memorial service to which relatives and friends are invited to attend will be held in the Pilgrim Congregational Church, 45 Broadway, Taunton, on Friday, November 23, 2007, at 2:00PM.
