View Tribute and Sign Guestbook FALL RIVER, MA – John E. O'Brien, 85, of Fall River, died Sunday, January 17, 2010, at Adams House in Fall River. Born in Fall River, the son of the late John E. and Isabelle (Casey) O’Brien, he was the husband of the late Agnes (Travers) O’Brien.
A 1941 graduate of BMC Durfee High School and a member of the class reunion committee, Mr. O’Brien continued his education at Bradford Durfee Textile School, leaving to join the United States Army. He served with the infantry during WWII.
Mr. O’Brien was a member of the Fall River Fire Department. He then worked as a fire protection engineer for the Grinnell Fire Extinguisher Company in Providence, RI, installing fire extinguisher units. After his retirement, John developed a keen interest in the New Bedford Whaling Museum where he became a docent. This allowed him to spend many joyful productive hours at the museum. John was also a communicant of Holy Name Church in Fall River.
He is survived by a sister, Isabelle Blake of Assonet, MA; a friend and companion, Carol Finnegan of Cranston, RI; a niece and caregiver, Elizabeth Rezendes and her husband Alfred of Assonet; a nephew, Timothy Blake and his wife Joanne of New Hampshire; a great niece, Susan Rezendes; and three great-nephews Alan Rezendes and Matthew and Jeffrey Blake.
Funeral Information
His funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at 10:00am in the HATHAWAY HOME for FUNERALS, 1813 Robeson St., Fall River, MA, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am in Holy Name Church, 709 Hanover St., Fall River. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will follow with Full Military Honors in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence, RI. Calling hours will be prior to the Mass from 9:00-10:00am in the funeral home.
