Fall River - Judith A. Yoken, after a long and valiant fight against colon cancer, died Thursday, August 13, 2009, at the Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. She was born in Providence, RI, the daughter of the late Max and Irene Isserlis.

A 1964 graduate of Durfee High School, she graduated from the Chandler School in Boston where she received a degree as a legal secretary. Her first position was at the law firm of Horvitz and Horvitz working for attorneys Phil Goltz and Bob Allen. Furthering her education at Lesley College, she received a B.S. Degree in Early Childhood Special Needs.

She was employed as a substitute teacher in the Fall River Schools. Shortly thereafter, she became an Early Childhood Special Needs Teacher in the New Bedford School Department. Judy had severe special needs students which included the Down Syndrome, the abused, the handicapped and the forgotten. Judy made a difference where previously there was NO hope. She loved these special children and they loved her.

Her varied career included being a real estate agent, Co-President of the Temple Beth El Sisterhood in Fall River, and President of the Hebrew Ladies, who sponsored an annual Fashion Show and upscale boutique at the Venus De Milo. She was also an actor, who performed the part of Shulamit Friedland in Tales of Six Women at Temple Beth El.

Weekends, she worked as a disc jockey with her husband, Steve, for forty-nine years! At the conclusion of each event, Judy always seemed to received much appreciation and applause from the guests. Antique & vintage jewelry became a hobby and progressed to a business in recent years. As a result, Judy and her husband, Steve, participated in the Scholarship Foundation Christmas Show at Durfee High School. Judy had a keen eye for hand-made Victorian, Edwardian & Art Deco pieces that buyers eagerly sought. In addition, through Judy’s detailed & accurate descriptions, Ebay produced new sales opportunities.

She was married to her beloved husband, Steve, a teacher for forty years. Her loving daughters are Laurie B. Yoken of Fall River, a Vision Specialist and a volunteer at Charlton Memorial Hospital, Elisa A. Goldstein, a speech pathologist from Germantown, Maryland, along with her husband, Daniel, and their son, her grandchild, Zachary. She leaves a brother, Errol Isserlis of Fall River. She also leaves her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mel and Cindy Yoken of New Bedford, as well as three beloved nephews and their wives, David and Dara Yoken, Jon and Jody Yoken and Andrew Yoken.
