View Tribute and Sign Guestbook NEW BEDFORD – Joaquim "Jack" Barreira, 70, of Acushnet died unexpectedly on Thursday, December 20, 2007, at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. Born in Anelhe, Portugal, the son of the late Manuel and the late Maria (Victorino) Barreira, he came to this country when he was sixteen and made his home in Acushnet for the past fifty years.
Mr. Barreira was a member of the Laborer’s Union and worked for Savin Construction Company in Connecticut for more than thirty-five years before retiring ten years ago. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and working in his yard.
He is survived by two sisters, Sylvana Alphonse of Fairhaven and Isabel Almeida and her husband Hipolito of Windsor, CT; three nephews, William Alphonse, Jr., of Dartmouth, Paul Almeida of CT and Russell Alphonse of Fairhaven; four nieces, Diane Parr, Carol Rock and Linda Pires, all of Fairhaven, and Lisa McCarthy of CT; and several great-nieces, great-nephews and relatives in Portugal.
