Carlton H. Yates
June 08, 2017
Carlton Henry Yates, age 90, of Portsmouth, RI, formerly of Swansea, MA, passed away on Thursday, June 8, 2017, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He is now reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife May Esther (Grime) Yates to whom he had been married for almost 50 years at the time of her passing on September 21, 2003.
Born on December 23, 1926, and raised in Fall River, MA, he was the only child of the late Henry Dugdale and Margaret (Taylor) Yates.
After graduating from B.M.C. Durfee High School in 1945, he served in the U.S. Navy for two years and then entered Brown University under the GI Bill, graduating in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.
After college, he worked for Firestone Industrial Products, in Fall River, where he met his wife, May Esther. They were married in 1953 at Christ Church and their first home was in Swansea, moving to Portsmouth in 1968. He worked for Firestone for almost 20 years and was Vice President of Firestone Industrial Products for Mechanical Goods when he made a career shift. Together with his wife, they founded C. H. Yates Rubber Corp. in 1972 and worked side-by-side building a business in which they manufactured rubber and plastic caster wheels and boat trailer rollers. He continued to serve as President, working full-time until his passing. He cherished all of the people who worked at the business over the decades. One of his greatest joys was working with all of his children and his grandson, Dale. He took great pride in seeing the family business grow to span three generations.
An active and loved member of Christ Church, he served on the Vestry, the Finance Committee, and as Treasurer for many years.
A man devoted to his family. He took great pleasure in traveling far and wide to watch any family member in every game, recital, graduation or event that he could possibly attend in any kind of weather.
He is survived by his daughter Margaret O. (Peggy) Yates-Berg, her husband Daniel, and their children Dale (his wife Allie), Meggi, and Rachel; by his son Edwin R. (Ted) Yates, his wife Gail, and their children Joseph and Jennifer; by his son Robert B. (Bob) Yates, his children Kendall, Taylor and Robbie, and their mother Denise; and by his great-grandson Emerson Yates-Berg. He was preceded in death by his son Carlton Dugdale (Dale) Yates in 1975.
