View Tribute and Sign Guestbook NEW BEDFORD–Shirley I. (Stone) Whittaker, 85, of New Bedford, died Friday, August 21, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford after a brief illness. She was the wife of Wilbur Whittaker. Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Herbert H. and the late Annie M. (Nicholson) Stone, she was a lifelong resident of the city and longtime member of the South Primitive Methodist Church.
Mrs. Whittaker was a graduate of New Bedford High School and later worked for twenty years in the New Bedford School Department, in the cafeteria at New Bedford High School, until retiring in 1981. She was an avid reader and later enjoyed listening to recorded books. She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and, most of all, spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband; a son, William K. Whittaker and his wife Deborah of Fairhaven; a daughter, Marjorie J. Ouellette and her husband Charles of Wareham; a sister, Muriel Doherty and her husband Daniel of Connecticut; six grandchildren, Karrie Condez, Scott Barrett, John Wood, Amy Cabral, Megan Barrett and Micah Wood; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Whittaker was the mother of the late Marilyn E. Wood, the sister of the late Herbert T. “Herbie” Stone and Dorothy Dohne, and the great-grandmother of the late Brittany Barrett.

Calling hours are Monday, August 24, 2009, from 5:00-9:00PM in THE DONAGHY FUNERAL HOME, 465 County Street, New Bedford, with a funeral service at 7:00PM. Cremation will follow.
